No Snakes on my Plane

It's been a while since I last had an entry. I'd just returned from a 2-week break to Milan-Como-Zermatt-Zürich-Lucerne-Amsterdam-Paris. Phew. It's one of those rare occasions when we have a break in the movie calendar. Soon James Bond's Casino Royale will be driving me mad. It's Open Season and I'm going to get a Nightmare Before Christmas as well, with a Curse of the Golden Flower notwithstanding. I just hope The Guardian will watch over me. You see, I have The Covenant to keep with the client. Should I find the time, I'll tell you some Tales from Earthsea. Have I said it before? Seems like Déja Vu.

So much for rambling and corny attempts to be funny. I should try harder. sigh. As my good friend would say... HAO LIAN.

OK, what I want talk about is the Internet phenomenon called Snakes on a Plane. I just need to have my piece on cyberspace after travelling more than 17 hours (including a stop-over) on a plane (what else?). While so much has been discussed about SoaP and how much unprecedented interest was generated on the Internet with fan sites, spoofs, fanfic etc...on the movie when it has just opened in the US as I am writing this, my question is this: How much of that Internet Phenomenon will actually help the box office? Probably not much. The Internet community in the US ≠ The Movie-Going Community. How much of that two spheres are intersecting in Venn Diagrams I don't know but I don't believe it to be more than 50%. I believe the buzz has been magnified on the
Internet platform. I might be proven wrong though for the following reason. People want to see snakes.

In Singapore, the film may possibly do well simply because people want to see snakes. Full stop. I have a morbid fear of snakes, I almost stepped on one once when I was 'visiting' my aunt at Mount Vernon Columbarium. It skittered away before I actually stepped on it. Luckily for me, else I would have been traumatised by a snake bite.... Luckily
for the snake, for it would have traumatised by this screaming dodo.

Back to the point. I will still choose to watch SoaP because its a safe way to face my fears. By watching the movie, I can claim to justify my fears of snakes and perhaps feel that they are indeed meant to be feared even though I know that most snake bites aren't poisonous and they are just protecting themselves, yadda yadda... As for flying, I don't fear it but I don't enjoy doing it (I do mean flying on a plane).... even if I'm travelling on Business Class. I hadn't had the opportunity to travel First Class so I can't comment on that. (It's not wishful thinking. It's just fat hope). I don't like to be buckled up and be constrained within a defined perimeter for long. I want to have the choice of moving from A to B to C to ... you get the idea. On the plane, A to B to C means within a 1 metre radius at most... and Z means going to the furthest toilet I can find, just to stretch my legs and 'squeeze' my boredom to death without much success.
