Why do I keep searching for the ideal curry puff?

My memory of eating curry puff goes as far back to the time when I was 9 years old. I was in primary three then, in a neighbourhood primary school called Kebun Baru Primary School. It was a new school where I was the pioneer batch to have begun classes since Primary 1. During that time, the school building wasn't even ready and we had to put up at another school's premise.

I remember soon after about a year or so, we moved into the new school building. It was fantastic because the new school compound was within short walking distance from our home. The only peeve was that getting to or away from my home to school required one to walk up/down a very long flight of steps, since our block of flats was situated on a pretty steep slope. I had counted 80 steps once. What comforted me was that I had the luxury of playing at a playground between my home and the school everyday with my neighbours before deciding enough is enough.

The story of curry puff started with a name, Wenxiang. Wenxiang was one of my classmates then. Among the parents' grapevine, we found out that Wenxiang's parents were divorced and he had lived with his grandmother. My memories of Wenxiang is vague. Perhaps due to his parents' divorce, I never felt he was close to anyone and appeared aloof, although he had never been a problem for anyone or stuck out in anyway.

What I remembered most was his grandmother. Me as a nine-year old boy remembered her as an ordinary-looking grandmother who was always in her samfu. She appeared to be really old with her wrinkles on her face and her sunken eyes. Her frame was wiry and her fingers boney which made her look very frail. She was in every way the opposite of my maternal grandmother. My granny was large-framed, knew how to entertain herself, loved to smoke cigarettes curled in pink porous paper, spoke in a loud boom-my voice and liked to boss people around. At least, that was my impression of her. On the other hand, I had wondered what Wenxiang's grandmother would do if he was to rebel against his grandmother. Her almost silver-white hair was permed in the style that was even less fashionable than my grandmother's and the style had appeared then to have been kept since the 1970s, while my grandmother had dyed and highlighted her hair every so often, complaining that her hair was turning white.

On which day I can't quite remember. What I did remember though was that one day Wenxiang's grandmother appeared outside our doorsteps. She was carrying a basket with her. My mother went to the door and understood from her that she had received no allowance from either of Wenxiang's parent. In order to support her grandson, the old lady had to find ways to earn her keep and making curry puffs was the only way she knew. We bought a few at thirty-cents each. Each puff was pressed into the bulgy shape made by a plastic mould, and came with ends that resembled a pleated skirt. My mother had one but I had never seen her use it. Instead I had on occasions used the mould to entertain myself, imagining it as a puppet which it resembles with its teeth and mouth-like appearance when closed. Sometimes I used it to clamp my younger brother's ears. Inside the puff was curry paste with potato, and a full quarter of a hard-boiled egg. The filling was moist and the egg filled almost half the body of the entire puff. My brothers and I loved how the pastry was crisp without falling apart. The skin was smooth with pockets of bursted air bubbles which made it resemble the moon that the astronauts had showed us, and what I read in encyclopedias.

Wenxiang's grandmother had to walk from block to block, level to level and door to door to pedal her curry puffs. Every time my younger brothers and I hear her calling out 'kalipok' from a distance, we would rush to find my mother's coin purse and find whatever coins we can get to buy all the curry puffs that we can afford. We loved the curry puff so much that each of us can easily wolf three down every time, much to my mother's amusement and dismay.

After graduating from primary school and leaving for secondary school, I was hardly at home and no longer had the chance to eat Wenxiang grandmother's curry puffs and soon had forgotten all about it. I also graduated to more sophisticated fare like croissant and puff pastries. As time progressed and Old Chang Kee became more popular, I was reminded of Wenxiang grandmother's curry puffs, and had supposed that the old lady must have passed on after all those years. If she didn't, the heavens must have truly blessed her.

I guess I will never find the ideal curry puff ever again, one that is filled with the calling of the curry puff by its corrupted name from a very frail-looking old lady, who went round house to house rain or shine so that her grandson could have an education and future without his parents. All these however wonderful curry puffs that I had been seeking shall never be perfect, at least not in my memory.totorohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11777579444454989344noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8013300.post-80338860193192205722010-07-15T01:31:00.003+08:002010-07-15T01:37:00.999+08:00A new startI just 'redesigned' the look and header of this blog. Some things are waiting to be shared but I need to think them through these few days while I wrap up my current projects (http://www.facebook.com/sharehappySingapore), and before I start on new ones (yes I already have work confirmed and lined up till end of October).

For now, I shall talk about the movie INCEPTION and what it means to me.

I watched INCEPTION yesterday and was inspired both personally and professionally. The story is an interesting one, to say the least. The plot engaging but I half suspect that a large number of Singaporeans may find it tedious, preferring popcorn fare such as Prince of Persia to this.

This is not to say Singaporeans are generally lazy or stupid. Our lives sometimes just make us choose what is easier when picking entertainment, away from work's grind; without having to think so hard.

Short of going into the a review and analysis of the film (for the review, you can find it at incinemas.sg by another reviewer), I think INCEPTION affects me much as many people in the way that it manages to put into film what we can identify but can't really put into words. Some of these ideas are not now, but when packaged in the way INCEPTION, it becomes a novel way of looking at old news.

I can identify with the following:

1 Our dreams seem real.

2 Time seems to pass slower in dreams than in reality.

3 When we realise that we are dreaming, our dreams start to fall apart (at least for me).

4 I sometimes engineer my surroundings in my dream to fit my purpose (a Freudian analysis altogether) but yes, I do project my subconscious in my dreams and sometimes I know it.

I can't say I remember most of my dreams, as most seem to be independent and discrete from each other (very mathematical I know). However I also had the privilege to experience continuous and episodic dreams. i.e. subsequent dreams (after a period of time, say days, or months, that seem to form a larger story continuously from where my earlier dream left off. They are not often but they are exciting when they do happen. I can't say for sure when they do. One such 'series' is the flying dream, where by conditioning my mind and adjusting my body instinctly, I will start to float and can travel to places I choose to go. Dream on I know, but such dreams make me happy and empowers me, giving me greater energy and making me alert to face the real (?) world the next day.

Conversely, there are times when I know I'm dreaming, but I can't wake up from it even hard as I try, when my body receives a kick (usually pain in my kidney area due to my pillow pressing on me) but the mind refuses to release me from my dream. Such times I struggle futilely as time seems to pass so slowly. This is my personal version of 'Nightmare on Elm Street'. Usually I encounter so much pain at my waist, which appears real to me, to the point that it becomes no longer bearable, then do I wake up. And yes, my body feels the pain but much duller when I'm awake.

Thirdly, I have solved most of the problems I encounter during the day since I was young. We are not talking about mathematical or social problems. Usually projects which require me to think different. Out of the box if you choose to see it. But to me, my dreams allow me to drop logic, facts and allows my imagination to take over. So, I'm most creative when I dream and that is one reason why I like to sleep. Perhaps you can try this too. It works for me. I write down the problem I try to solve or think about it seriously for a few minutes just before I drift off to sleep, at the state of semi-consciousness. Usually I would have found what I thought was a brilliant solution that could not have happened if I were awake. This is also why I tend to thank God in the morning instead of before sleep. As a side note, I find it unacceptable to pray to 'God' for a solution, so I rather give thanks for the solution for coming to me.

OK, enough about me, but as dreams are personal, I can't take myself out of it completely. Back to the film, what INCEPTION offers in addition is the idea that you can enter someone's dream and subconscious and 'peek'/'steal' whatever he/she is thinking at the superficial and subconscious levels. I bet this film is going to be a hot discussion point for all our psychology students.

If you still don't have much of a idea of what I'm saying, it's best to experience the film for yourself, but unlike some films where reading the book beforehand enhances the pleasure of watching the film. It is probably best that you start dreaming before watching this film.totorohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11777579444454989344noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8013300.post-30304705642463476812009-08-25T21:37:00.002+08:002009-08-25T21:39:55.035+08:00My Lego Avatar<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 250px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQWPRAs4tXFyvZS0TwjqmceTXCi0-S83dNdN15qm2VDZq9y2ESHhxu_K7bxqQtCFqis-tSBB5WmUHBfeSDrKVk9suhrNK23Vz35tS7sutDKkALvQsL-zK9YSpYjrSMBw0Jo0PhWw/s400/24478755-2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373895631081868658" />

Look like me bo?totorohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11777579444454989344noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8013300.post-28028784129953557762009-08-25T21:36:00.002+08:002009-08-25T21:37:27.404+08:00Lego Book<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5wlvtxccnp4SlHCuxwWccjAqFBWve7gjkSLLwzaMWj_k__v5aj_V1ywwDeC2yfVhm7I59v9QGCd2ID4Zr9qRd-ZbLZvPTqxeWUriSuoKD1tUyQjyz-oHM9rwltf_rcoaHKfZO5A/s400/61h2ufiVwIL._SS500_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373894928789936386" />

This is coming out. I found the words to be very meaningful and discovered that it was actually written by a Singaporean.

Sometimes I think about life and the people whom we meet, the times that has passed. I try to appreciate what I have before they are lost forever for one reason or another.

I can be a very loyal person and sometimes too sentimental. When I listen to a song, I listen to it for it's lyrics for a few times, then it's construction in terms of progression, instrumentation, musical development and so on... I've listened to this song ad nausem for more than 150 times in less than 5 days. No I'm not obssessed, but it speaks of the philosophy when I tend to approach things which I want to know more about or understand... by repetition exposure. (meaning behind that: I'm not that intelligent and try to compensate by doing more! ha!)

The bottomline is I have been feeling rather downcast lately with my tonsilitis and my problems at work (nothing new). Add that to the feeling of being taken for granted without any reprieve from pressure when I needed one...

I'm recovering from melancholy and starting to slip into indifference... something I don't quite enjoy feeling as I feel responsible making sure everything is OK before I embark on a 3 week ICT (holiday? I wish). Phones will still be coming in.. so I guess I will work from camp since as a workshop 2IC I don't really have that much to do. Hello?!? V200 armoured tanks in need of repair by NSmen instead of active servicemen?!?!?!?!?!? I think I'll end up with some logistics work and to wait for lunch wait for dinner wait for nightsnack... argh... I hate life like that... worse than being kept at work nonstop.

Hope I come out of ICT without feeling too deranged. :|totorohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11777579444454989344noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8013300.post-61287866448819560172007-04-18T08:43:00.000+08:002008-11-13T19:06:50.817+08:00Comic<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj07kbmrff5tPJmR3uFblSpRZIrY792cECT4y-r3SvF9thduIKSNrCpQ-MPjiTItl9hSfZQT_LNeT8nbUqJQBylFDc550jUI6GC5YVGnaZX6aZnnFf0F9C0l-WgApINtYwHygDppA/s400/Funny_Stuff_349.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5054562695853852674" />

OK so I use Mac. I'd just returned from a 2-week break to Milan-Como-Zermatt-Zürich-Lucerne-Amsterdam-Paris. Phew. It's one of those rare occasions when we have a break in the movie calendar. Soon James Bond's Casino Royale will be driving me mad. It's Open Season and I'm going to get a Nightmare Before Christmas as well, with a Curse of the Golden Flower notwithstanding. I just hope The Guardian will watch over me. You see, I have The Covenant to keep with the client. Should I find the time, I'll tell you some Tales from Earthsea. Have I said it before? Seems like Déja Vu.

So much for rambling and corny attempts to be funny. I should try harder. sigh. As my good friend would say... HAO LIAN.

OK, what I want talk about is the Internet phenomenon called Snakes on a Plane. I just need to have my piece on cyberspace after travelling more than 17 hours (including a stop-over) on a plane (what else?). While so much has been discussed about SoaP and how much unprecedented interest was generated on the Internet with fan sites, spoofs, fanfic etc...on the movie when it has just opened in the US as I am writing this, my question is this: How much of that Internet Phenomenon will actually help the box office? Probably not much. The Internet community in the US ≠ The Movie-Going Community. How much of that two spheres are intersecting in Venn Diagrams I don't know but I don't believe it to be more than 50%. I believe the buzz has been magnified on the
Internet platform. I might be proven wrong though for the following reason. People want to see snakes.

In Singapore, the film may possibly do well simply because people want to see snakes. Full stop. I have a morbid fear of snakes, I almost stepped on one once when I was 'visiting' my aunt at Mount Vernon Columbarium. It skittered away before I actually stepped on it. Luckily for me, else I would have been traumatised by a snake bite.... Luckily
for the snake, for it would have traumatised by this screaming dodo.

Back to the point. I will still choose to watch SoaP because its a safe way to face my fears. By watching the movie, I can claim to justify my fears of snakes and perhaps feel that they are indeed meant to be feared even though I know that most snake bites aren't poisonous and they are just protecting themselves, yadda yadda... As for flying, I don't fear it but I don't enjoy doing it (I do mean flying on a plane).... even if I'm travelling on Business Class. I hadn't had the opportunity to travel First Class so I can't comment on that. (It's not wishful thinking. It's just fat hope). I don't like to be buckled up and be constrained within a defined perimeter for long. I want to have the choice of moving from A to B to C to ... you get the idea. On the plane, A to B to C means within a 1 metre radius at most... and Z means going to the furthest toilet I can find, just to stretch my legs and 'squeeze' my boredom to death without much success.
totorohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11777579444454989344noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8013300.post-1149694183547940012006-06-07T23:27:00.000+08:002006-06-07T23:29:43.570+08:00McDull - Hong Kong's Popular CartoonActually I know about this video for a long long time liao and I have all the DVD/VCD books.

I like McDull for the following reasons:

1. some parts quite farnie
2. I woke up and like Mr Brown... went to do many many things. I started at 8am at Toa Payoh and was round the whole island doing something...(secret! cannot say, even though polling day is over) until 2pm. I went to Bedok wanting to eat the nice nice Bak Chor Mee with nice nice ter gnua (No, not the Mr Brown one!) but ended up eating the lao ya 高记 yong tau foo. Usually the latter's not too bad at other branches but this one at Bedok Central was the nua nua type. Then I went to the gym and then I wen to VOTE and then I out to work the ground (i.e. for my movie campaign!) some more. I want to move on to other things besides The Da Vinci Code.

My mum did something 'wah-piang' that day. Wanting to make sure she knows how to make a proper cross in the ballot paper, I asked her if she knows how to vote (she's more experienced than I am actually, but she last voted more than 10 years ago, so I thought I want to remind her). she told me 'Make a cross in the XXX party ah'? in public! I just quickly moved her along and said 'No lah! What I meant was how you should cross the box properly to prevent it from becoming a spoilt vote!' If tomorrow I kena arrested for instigating people to vote for XXX or YYY, I'd like to clarify 'I'm innocent!' Alas, in Singapore you are guilty until proven innocent. And my innocent and naive mother will assist in investigations as they see fit.

Talking about arresting people. James Gomez kena arrested. I became sad last night. Not because I am a James Gomez supporter but I think that we simply need to MOVE ON!

'BTW, Sylvia Lim from the Worker's Party, if the next time you go contest for elections in my ward, I will go and listen to your rally. Although I know little about you, somehow you managed to get my attention and I respect you for the things you say and do'!

Lest you think I am an anti-govt activist, I respect the SM Mr Goh and I was in the Marine Parade Youth Executive Comittee for a while (No, I do not live in Marine Parade GRC), doing what I could for the youths of Singapore. But the cost of keeping my family together and maintaining my work commitments means I had to prioritise. Something had to go.

I just needed to get something off my chest but I scared kena arrested. Wait Davin the Cheeko will be sitting beside me in the jail cell... then I have to face him day after day. I just want to MOVE ON!totorohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11777579444454989344noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8013300.post-1145371018179270032006-04-18T22:25:00.000+08:002006-04-29T15:28:11.023+08:00Stock-taking
No. Not the annual type though today is the last day to submit income tax (sad....) I hate doing taxes!!!!

Just had a class reunion about 2 months ago with the guys from RI at the school's dining hall. The canteen and the assembly hall had been torn down to make way for (what's new?...) bigger and 'better' premises. I was also back for the RJC Open House. I can't believe elitist education can be so... elitist!

From left to right (Back): Guoxiang, Lingzhi, Caihong, Me, Guanzhi, Hanmin, Longhui, Lester, Suan Hau, Hendricks
(Front): Mdm Tan Geok Hoon, Mr David Court

Hendricks Sutiono is already a father of 2. Lester Goh is getting married this May!

Met an old friend Gabriel Lim who was my classmate in lower sec in RI as well as my classmate in AJC last 2 weeks. He's a teacher in Jurong Junior College now.

Something gripped me to start writing to Esther, another schoolmate from AJC who seems to be having a ball of her life in San Francisco working in a pretty cool-looking W hotel (part of Sheraton group I think). Great personality!

Still trying to complete my CSI New York on DVD so that I can move on to Without a Trace Season 2... and yeah... loads of books and DVDs piling up on the backend... including an entire array of books on mystery and crime. I've turn into a whodunnit wannabe. it's great to feel like a wannabe at 30... rather than a 'has-been'.

Hey people from my school days, I'd like to hear from you. Please don't make it a wedding/funeral thing to get together or for me to hear from you. Even then, you might not even turn up and I can only die once, or I'd like to believe.

So here's for today. Need to get up early tomorrow to brief the office before leaving for a long 'Coded' meeting. Akan Datang, so it goes.totorohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11777579444454989344noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8013300.post-1144932154802789442006-04-13T20:42:00.000+08:002006-04-13T20:45:20.576+08:00The Da Vinci Code

It's one of the most talk-about and anticipated movie... and I'm already overrun with work for the movie.

Just started the online recruitment campaign to get people to break codes to join the islandwide hunt - winning a trip to Europe with "money-can't-buy" experiences (how many times have I repeated this?).

My life needs to move on... after creating all the codes and making life miserable for people.... I am thinking in fact that my weight is starting to hinder my social life as well as my health.

So, I'm going to start keeping a log of what exercise I have been doing and the results that may (not) come along with it.

For the last 5 weeks, I have been swimming every Sunday morning. From the initial 10 laps of pool, I have progressed to 20 laps of pool. My weight had changed from 80kg to 78kg.

At this point my stats are as follows:

weight 78kg
waist: 33"

OK, we shall see what happens to the rest of my body then.

All I want is to pass my IPPT (OK to be frank, maybe get at least a silver as well). I'm going to see where this is heading.totorohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11777579444454989344noreply@blogger.com0
